Many patients experience financial difficulty while undergoing treatment. The stress of securing transportation to and from appointments and meeting the cost of their care along with their other basic needs makes their care especially difficult. At Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC), we work to relieve that stress, so patients can focus on getting well.
There are two Patient Resource funds:

SVMC Patient Resource Fund
When patients have difficulty meeting basic needs, they are referred to the social services department. A social worker listens to the patient's situation to determine how to help. Usually, the social worker connects patients to service organizations whose mission it is to help people with their particular need.
The patient may be considered to receive funds from the patient resource fund if the patient:
- Has a need that is cannot be satisfied by other local organizations
- Is generally making good health and financial choices
- Can return to independence after help with a small one-time expense related to a medical condition
Payments are made to the companies fulfilling the needs, rather than to patients themselves. In some cases, gas or grocery store gift cards are provided. In many cases, an amount of $200 or less is able to make a lasting and life-changing impact for a disadvantaged or vulnerable patient.
Cancer Center Community Crusaders' Fund
Designed to relieve some of the stresses of undergoing cancer treatment, the Cancer Center Community Crusaders' Fund provides financial support specifically for cancer patients. Patients have received gas cards to meet the additional expense of daily travel related to treatment, heating fuel, and funds to help them enjoy time with family and friends. A contribution to this fund is certain to make an emotional difference to a person struggling with cancer.
