The Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) Board of Trustees provides strategic leadership for the health system.
The Board has several responsibilities:
- Establish the health system's mission and vision.
- Provide guidance and oversight for organizational planning.
- Oversee the management of the organization's finances and overall assets.
- Represent the needs of the community and ensure that the health system considers those needs in the programs and services it provides.
Nomination process
Board members are nominated by the Board’s Nominating Committee and voted on by the entire board and ratified by the Dartmouth Health Board of Trustees. In selecting new SVMC board members, the nominating committee looks for candidates who exemplify SVMC's values, can be counted on to actively participate in board work, and have leadership capabilities. SVMC also looks for candidates who represent the communities the health system serves and who have special expertise that will be useful to the Board in fulfilling its duties.
Trustees committees
Board members serve on committees that oversee the various operations of our health system. As with most boards of directors, the Board only has authority when it meets. SVMC's president and chief executive officer, acts on behalf of the Board, leading the SVMC's executive management team in running day-to-day operations.
Trustees meetings
SVMC's Board of Trustees meets regularly. These meetings are not public; however, board members are always willing to discuss issues with the community. Community members should feel free to address any SVMC board member. SVMC does not publish an annual report.

Open board meeting policy
The SVMC Board of Trustees are committed to ensuring that the SVMC Board conducts business in an open, transparent and inclusive manner. Accordingly, the Board holds quarterly meetings that include a public session, in which the community is given an opportunity for comment. In addition, SVMC's Board of Trustees, the Foundation’s Board of Directors and Regional Advisory Boards are comprised of individuals with close ties from the communities we serve. They are ambassadors for SVMC in each community, actively engaged in dialogue with each region and bring public comments and feedback to the health system.
Below is schedule of the SVMC Board meetings. The SVMC Board encourages members of the public to attend its public sessions, and welcomes comments and feedback. Each quarterly public session starts lasts for a half hour. For those individuals who cannot attend a public session, comments can be emailed in advance to Open Board Meeting Comments at websiteadmin@svhealthcare.org and will be brought up at the next immediately scheduled session.
