Obstetrics and Gynecology

Caring for you at every stage of life

As a woman, caring for your body is an ever-evolving process. Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) offers personalized care that’s as unique as you—and your body. We’re here to listen and to help you understand and manage your choices so that you remain healthy at every age and stage of life.

Treatments and services

Preventive women's health

Routine preventive care is critical to your long-term gynecological health. Routine care can help spot and prevent health problems before they occur. And if an issue arises, early intervention means it may be easier to treat and pose less of health risk to you.

Depending upon your age, your preventive care services may include:

  • Bone density testing
  • Breast exam
  • Colorectal cancer screening
  • Diabetes testing
  • HIV screening
  • Lipid profile
  • Mammography
  • Pap smear
  • Thyroid screening
  • Urinalysis

Because transitioning to womanhood can be challenging, our practice treats adolescents. Our caregivers treat young women with a level of care, understanding, and honesty that helps them develop safe and healthful habits. Through education, counseling and screenings, we strive to help them take ownership of their bodies, their feelings, and their choices.

Breast exams and mammography

Regular breast exams can improve the chances of detecting breast cancer early. In some cases, your provider may also recommend imaging to assess any questionable findings. We are proud to offer digital mammography and other breast imaging services in our Breast Health and Imaging Center and as part of our nationally accredited Breast Care Program.

Family planning and contraception

  • Family planning: When you’re ready to make choices about family planning, we’re here to offer the support and information you need to make the choice that’s right for you. We can assist with all aspects of contraception management, abnormal pregnancies, miscarriage management, and addressing heavy menstrual bleeding and pain. We work closely with your primary care physician to ensure all other health issues are considered and offer referrals for counseling as needed.
  • Contraception: Selecting a contraceptive method is a highly personal choice. We’ll work with you to make sure you understand your options and the risks associated with each. In addition to providing prescriptions for different oral contraceptives, we provide IUD and Nexplanon placement. And should you decide to discontinue use in the future, we’ll be here to explain how to do it safely and plan for your next stage of life.

Obstetrics, birth, and postpartum care

  • Obstetrics: With more than 400 births annually, we offer experienced care and state-of-the-art services to ensure every baby—and family—gets a healthy start. Our team includes board-certified obstetricians and a Magnet-recognized nursing team, who work with you to create a birth plan that meets your individual needs. Birth options include c-section, vaginal, and V-BAC. Learn more about the maternity care we offer.
  • Post-partum care: No doubt about it. Bringing a life into this world is hard work. As a patient at SVMC, you benefit from an experienced staff that can help you understand the changes that take place in your body as a result of childbirth and spot any potential problems early. Our staff will educate you on the changes that will be taking place in the days and weeks ahead and offer advice on pain management and returning to normal activities.

Perimenopause and menopause care

Perimenopause and menopause can have both physical and psychological effects on women. Our team is skilled at helping you understand the changes that are occurring and guiding you to possible options for any care that might be needed.

From evaluating abnormal menstrual cycles and explaining hormone replacement therapies to finding relief from troublesome symptoms and preparing for what’s next, we'll work with you to find ways to minimize the physical and emotional effects of these change-of-life events.

Other services

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding: Abnormal uterine bleeding can happen at any age and can be caused by any number of reasons. At SVMC, we rely on a number of diagnostic tools and techniques including ultrasound, MRIs, and hysteroscopy to pinpoint the causes of abnormal bleeding and begin appropriate treatment as early as possible.
  • Gynecological surgery: When the need for surgery arises—whether it is planned or emergent—our physicians will see you through. The practice offers caesarean delivery, tubal ligation, hysterectomy, hysteroscopy, and cyst removal.
