Treatments and services

We offer a full range of surgical and non-surgical procedures to treat common musculoskeletal injuries and degenerative diseases that affect older adults as well as younger adults and athletes.

Our comprehensive approach to managing patient care makes it possible for you to get a prompt diagnosis and treatment plan during your first appointment. Depending on your situation, we may be able to provide immediate pain relief in the office, including:

  • Carpal tunnel surgery
  • Needle aponeurotomy for the treatment of Dupuytren’s contracture
  • Orthovisc® injections for knee arthritis
  • Trigger finger release

Your treatment will be tailored specifically to you. Treatment may include a combination of surgical and non-surgical methods to provide pain relief, reduce inflammation and swelling, restore mobility, and correct any structural problems like fractures, deformities, or severe arthritis.

Arthritis care

Arthritis is a common condition that is often associated with aging, but arthritis can also develop with orthopedic trauma and certain autoimmune and inflammatory diseases (rheumatoid arthritis). Our orthopedic physicians stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in arthritis care, and most procedures for arthritis pain relief are done in the office.

The classic sign of arthritis is aching joints that may swell or become very stiff, resulting from the loss of cartilage in your joint. Walking and moving the affected joint can become very painful, and, in severe situations, can become too painful to bear.

We can recommend a variety of ways to deal with arthritis pain, including surgical and non-surgical treatments. A combination of prescription anti-inflammatories and pain medicine can help.

We also perform injections of Orthovisc® for knee arthritis, a medication that replaces natural joint fluid to cushion, protect, and lubricate your knee. It can provide pain relief for up to 6 months. It is injected directly into the joint for fast relief.

When these treatments no longer provide sufficient pain relief, you may want to consider a joint replacement procedure.

Fracture care

If you’ve recently been involved in an accident or suffered an injury, you may have a broken bone or minor fracture. You should have an X-ray to examine the fracture in detail.

We treat most fractures with a special cast that allows the bones to heal naturally. We will provide options for pain management and physical therapy during the healing process. If the fracture does not heal properly, surgery may be considered.

Joint replacement surgery

Joint replacement surgery is a common procedure we perform at Northern Berkshire Orthopedics. Many patients with severe arthritis eventually have the affected joint replaced so that they can move again without all the pain and swelling.

We believe that joint replacement should be considered based on individual factors, such as age, overall condition and activity level, lifestyle, and goals for recovery. Having a joint replacement procedure can relieve a lot of problems caused by deteriorating cartilage (arthritis). You and your doctor can discuss all the factors involved to determine what is best for your situation.

Our orthopedic surgeons have expertise with hip, knee, and shoulder replacements. Some of the most common procedures include:

  • Hip and knee surgery, including hip replacement, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair, knee arthroscopy, and total and partial knee replacement
  • Shoulder and elbow surgery, including rotator cuff repair, total shoulder replacement, and shoulder arthroscopy

Sports medicine

Our sports medicine specialists tailor their care to the needs of injured athletes who want to improve their overall physical condition for better performance and to prevent injuries in the future. Learn more about our sports medicine services.

Sprains and strains

Ligament injuries are typically referred to as a sprain (ankle sprain or wrist sprain), while strains are pulled muscles and tendon injuries that can happen almost anywhere in the body. Sprains and strains can happen at any time—during sports, exercise, leisure activities, or at work.

If you have a sprain, you may hear a popping sound when the injury happens, followed by pain, bruising, swelling, and, in severe cases, limited mobility. Strains usually cause muscle pain or weakness. Muscle spasms or cramping can also occur.

If you have a ligament or muscle injury, the doctor will perform an examination to assess your muscle strength and pain level. We may recommend physical therapy along with hot or cold therapy to reduce swelling and stiffness. If your symptoms are severe, you may have a torn ligament or muscle, in which case you may need a splint or brace for support and/or surgery.
