At Northern Berkshire Orthopedics, our sports medicine specialists tailor their care to the needs of injured athletes who want to improve their overall physical condition for better performance and to prevent injuries in the future.
In most cases, the body will heal naturally with the right combination of progressive strengthening exercises and rest. Movement is essential to avoid swelling and stiffness, which leads to more pain.
Our goal is to avoid surgery, but if you have a fracture or torn ligament, muscle, or tendon, surgery may be the primary treatment. Arthroscopic surgery is often used to treat sports injuries because it is minimally invasive, which means less pain, less scarring, less down time, and a faster return to sports. Arthroscopic surgery
Arthroscopic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that allows the surgeon to diagnose and repair diseased or damage tissue simultaneously. The goal of arthroscopy is to reduce pain and improve function or mobility in the joint.
In sports medicine, arthroscopy is often used for knee, shoulder, elbow, and ankle injuries involving tendons and ligaments. The surgeon makes two or three tiny incisions and inserts a miniature scope with surgical tools and a camera attached to examine the tissues inside the joint and make repairs on the spot. Because the incisions are so small, there is little or no scarring.
Benefits of arthroscopy:
- Small incisions
- Minimal scarring
- Very little bleeding
- Rapid recovery
- Less pain
