Patient stories
Linda Corey's story
Linda Corey is active in her job at Bennington Project Independence. She enjoys walking, especially around Old Bennington. When hip pain started to interfere with her life, she knew she needed to get help.
SVMC: How did you know that you needed surgery on your hip?
LC: My hip just started bothering me a lot in March, and it kept getting worse. My primary care provider gave me a cortisone shot, which made it feel a little better for a couple of days. Then it was just awful. I went to SVMC Orthopedics and got an X-ray. There was no doubt about it. They said, “You need a hip replacement.”
SVMC: What was your first appointment with Dr. Schneiderbauer like?
LC: When she told me I needed a hip replacement, I asked “Will do you do it?” She said, “Yes.” I asked, “Are you good at it?” She said, “Yes.” That was all the assurance I needed. I decided to do it right then. I was scheduled to take the Joint Replacement Class over the summer, and the surgery was scheduled for August 25.
SVMC: How did the surgery go?
LC: It went well. Whenever I am in a hospital, as soon as I know who I am and what I am doing, I want to be home. I was so glad when they told me it was safe for me to go home. I was home 7 hours after the surgery.
SVMC: How has your recovery been?
LC: Wonderful. Everything hurt before. It hurt to sit. It hurt to lay down. Now, it’s all good. I can walk without pain.
SVMC: What would you recommend others with joint pain do?
LC: Get into SVMC Orthopedics. The horrible pain is gone. I highly recommend it.
Kevin Dailey's story
Kevin Dailey suffered from constant knee pain and issues for his entire adult life after a skiing accident as a youth. He discusses his same day total knee replacement done by SVMC Orthpedics' surgeon Dr. Michaela Schneiderbauer.
Who is a candidate for same-day joint replacement?
The Same-Day Joint Replacement program is offered to highly motivated patients who seek quick recovery for total knee or hip joint replacement. Patients must meet strict criteria to participate and are pre-selected by their orthopedic physician. Patients must opt-in to participate. The Same-Day Joint Replacement program is unique because it tailors the recovery experience to each individual's goals to help him or her quickly return to the activities they enjoy most.
Although the orthopedic surgeon may recommend the patient for same-day joint replacement, the decision to have the procedure on an outpatient basis (less than 24 hours) is up to the patient and their insurance company. The patient must meet all the requirements during the preoperative phase in order to qualify.
What to expect before, during, and after surgery
Prehab: preparing for surgery
Before surgery, you will participate in activities to help you prepare for a more rapid recovery after knee or hip replacement surgery:
- Pre-operative physical therapy (prehab): The goal of prehab is to learn skills, exercises, and techniques before surgery that help accelerate recovery after knee hip or shoulder surgery.
- Pre-operative educational sessions: The orthopedic patient navigator and rehabilitation therapist provide a pre-operative education session. This session helps to alleviate anxiety and uncertainty about what to expect with joint replacement surgery. Your care plan will be individualized to meet your needs.
Minimally invasive joint replacement surgery
Our surgeons are highly skilled in the latest advancements in joint replacement surgery, including muscle-sparing approaches and techniques to minimize blood loss and postoperative inflammation. These techniques ease pain and allow for quick recovery for joint replacement patients.
Post-operative care: No hospital stay
Post-operative care is a coordinated effort among the orthopedic team with the collaborative goal of preparing you with a safe and comfortable return home. During post-operative care, pain control is tailored to your individual needs to maximize effectiveness. This will allow you to rest comfortably in your own home, and minimize side effects so you can participate in your rehab therapy program.
Rehabilitation and recovery
An accelerated therapy program begins just hours after the joint replacement surgery is completed. Upon their return home, you will participate in an outpatient rehabilitation program. Patients start outpatient therapy two weeks after surgery. All elements of care are coordinated by the orthopedic patient navigator.
