Athletes treating athletes

What’s remarkable about our team is that they are athletes themselves. They can relate to your sports injury, because they have been injured on the field (or court or slopes or track or course) themselves. They know what it takes to repair the damage and recover strong.

Athletes at all levels

Southwestern Vermont Medical Center Orthopedics and Sports Medicine physicians provide sideline medical coverage for athletic programs at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, Southern Vermont College, and Williams College, the collegiate summer baseball team the North Adams SteepleCats, not to mention many area high schools.

Treatments and services

  • ACL injuries: Injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament, known as the ACL, are suffered most commonly by athletes. ACL injuries are very painful and can be debilitating without proper treatment. Depending on the severity, treatments range from rest and rehabilitation to surgery. Athletes at all levels trust the physicians at SVMC Orthopedics to provide them with options and help them decide which treatment is best for them.
  • Meniscus tears: One of the most common knee injuries, a torn meniscus is caused by twisting the knee forcefully, especially while bearing full weight. The injury causes pain, swelling, and stiffness and may keep you from extending your knee fully. Often rest is enough to allow a torn meniscus to heal, but sometimes surgery is necessary. Our experienced physicians can help you decide which treatment is best for you.
  • Rotator cuff injuries: Rotator cuff injuries can occur as a result of one instance but often affect those who perform overhead motions regularly, like baseball and tennis players. It is signified by a deep, dull ache in the shoulder. Treatments vary, based on severity, from rest and ice to surgery.
  • Shoulder pain: Pain from the shoulder can have many causes. Our experienced physicians and advanced practice provider can help you identify the cause and get the treatment you need to alleviate the pain.
  • Tendonitis: Tendonitis results from inflammation of the cords (tendons) that connect muscles to bones. Tendonitis is often treated by rest, physical therapy, and medication to reduce pain. Torn tendons might need to be repaired with surgery.
